Reading is really the foundation for all your child's success in school, so there is a lot of emphasis put on reading in my class. The more children read, the better they become at reading. It's as simple as that. The more enjoyable the things they read are, the more they'll stick with them and develop the reading skills that they'll need for full access to information in their adult lives. Reading should be viewed as a pleasurable activity - as a source of entertaining tales and useful and interesting factual information. I use the Daily 5 to structure my literacy block (see side menu for more info).

One of the key components to your child's success this year will be reading daily at home. Ideally your child should take home a book each day to read with you. These are 20 Ways to fit in 20 minutes of reading at home.  Here are some tips to help your child become a confident, successful reader.  "Lit for Kids" is a great site to peruse booklists and find links to other wonderful sites about books and reading. For those who prefer reading online and we offer Raz-Kids. A note has been sent home with your child's unique login. This year we have combined classes to maximize our accounts so you will see Ms. Hill as the classroom teacher.

For those readers who still need some practice with basic sight words, here are some online wordsearches covering some of the most common words your child will have to read.

New! Most of our primary classes use the following word lists to help students recognize, read and spell commonly used words (high frequency words). Our class will also be using rainow words to start out with but our more advanced readers will progress to using these lists. There are 1000 words to learn to read and spell. Volunteers are always welcome to practice these and rainbow words with my students.
